The first documented ideas about its therapeutic potential emerged in 1920 in Russia, followed by further developments in  Austria in 1952 (Theodore Jachimowicz) and in Hungary, in 1953 (report from a commercial beekeeper). A major practical breakthrough occurred in Austria in the late 1980s. Heinrich Hüttner Jr. reported recognizing the beneficial potential of beehive air in 1987, and together with his father, Heinrich Hüttner Sr., developed a dedicated beehive-air extraction system in 1989, allowing hive air to be delivered through tubing for inhalation.
